Dr. Mac Brown, LP, CMPC

(he/him/his)

Life often presents with challenges that can catch us off guard or temporarily throw us off course. My approach is to meet the person where they are at and focus on what can help provide that individual a renewed sense of grounding in the here and now, a better understanding of past experiences, and a more holistic relationship with their identity.

As a former D1 athlete and due to my own experiences with injury and the impact on identity as an athlete, I pursued specialized training and acquired the Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) designation through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). I enjoy providing support for athletes who may be looking for "that extra edge" in their competition. I also provide support to athletes negotiating their identities that could be impacted by injury, transition in sport (new settings/teams, retirement), team dynamics, and other realms of performative excellence that individuals strive for outside of athletic realms.

Regarding my clinical work, I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Colorado and Massachusetts and credentialed for telehealth practice through PsyPact. I have experience working with mood disorders, grief and loss, performance enhancement, transition out of sport, injury, relationship difficulties, gender identity, and sexual orientation to name a few.

The move to Colorado in 2020 was prompted to pursue a full time position within athletics as a sport psychologist at CU Boulder. Prior to joining CU, I was the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations at Keene State College’s Wellness Center, Counseling Services, where I previously completed my predoctoral internship training. I have also worked in private practice for over six years with athletes pursuing Olympic trials in addition to pro and retired pro athletes.

I earned my bachelor’s of science in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from The University at Buffalo: The State University of New York in 2009 and was a member of the rowing team. I then completed a Masters in Psychology with a concentration in sport and exercise psychology as well as my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2011 and 2016, respectively.

When not working, I have enjoyed involvement in numerous endurance based events, including my completion of the 2019 Lake Placid Ironman. I also enjoy snowboarding, outdoor activities like camping or hiking, live music, dog park trips, and time with my family.

My approach begins with creating a safe, affirming, and authentic therapeutic alliance with my clients. I then work collaboratively with clients to identify what types of goals and supports they need and to move toward their valued actions and positive gains. I utilize integrative therapeutic strategies that include cognitive-behavioral, affective, experiential, and mindfulness-based techniques, which I tailor to client’s unique concerns. I also endeavor to understand clients’ identities, culture, and personal narratives deeply so that clients feel truly seen and respected in therapy.

I have expertise in working on symptoms of anxiety, mood, relational concerns, attachment, identity formation, and trauma. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and I have considerable experience working with young adults and adults. I also particularly welcome clients who would like to address intersectional identity concerns and/or have LGBTQIA+ backgrounds and are seeking a social-justice informed lens for their therapy.

I completed my B.A. at Bryn Mawr College where I majored in Psychology and minored in Education. I completed my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at Pacific University’s School of Graduate Psychology. During my graduate studies, I trained in community mental health and medical settings. I completed my internship year at Keene State College’s counseling center and my postdoctoral fellowship at Boston College’s university counseling services. Since becoming licensed I have worked in generalist private practices and I am currently licensed as a clinical psychologist in the state of Colorado and credentialed for telehealth practice through PsyPact.

On a personal level, I was born in the Boston area and moved to Colorado upon completing my studies. I love the outdoors and am an avid hiker and rock climber. I have recently become a mother (of a human child) and am also a dog-mom. When not at work, I love spending time with my family and friends in nature. I also love listening to, and strumming along with, folk and pop music and doing crosswords in my downtime.
